Which Version of Minecraft?

For our workshop, we’re looking for a version of Minecraft that supports mods — because we plan to use a bunch of them and maybe make some ourselves. There are basically two PC versions that support mods: Java Edition and Windows 10 edition.

A brief look around the crafting community will show that Java Edition, since it has been around longer, has more supported mods and more servers doing cool things. That would make it the hands-down choice except for one thing:

According to Mojang, Java Edition only plays with itself. If you have friends, or non-PC devices you’d like cross-play, you’re pretty much stuck with the Windows 10 version. It’s a major improvement that you can cross-play so many platforms since Mojang’s “Better Together” initiative made most consoles, mobile devices, and Windows 10 all able to share the same worlds and gameplay. However “Better Together” doesn’t apply to the Java Edition, which has the strongest crafting and moding community.

So basically, you can either have cool stuff, or all your non-PC friends. After due consideration, the Inceptus cohort has decided “Who needs friends anyway!?!” We’re going to be rolling out on the Java Edition, and we’ll let you know how it goes.
