[4] Four Layers of Meaning

Four Layers of Meaning illustrates layers of meaning or levels of interpretation of scripture, literature, or any type of narrative media. It uses [4] The Quad, a Frame of the fourth systems shape in the Semantic Ontology Framework (SOF). The Four Layers are based on traditional teachings on types of interpretation in Christian faith and practice.

The Four Layers are literal, moral, allegorical, and anagogical (see Frame for descriptions of each). Alternately, one could use the following respective synonyms for the layers: narrative, prescriptive, descriptive, and mysterious (or transcendent).
