Doing Hard Farming in Bad Soil
Jesus parable about [3] The Four Soils is key to understanding all his parables and teachings. It speaks deeply to the condition of human hearts and how they will receive the investment of God’s revelation in different ways. One of the hopeful ideas of the parable is that soil can be improved — with hard work that is. No one should hope to get easy fruit in bad soil without hard farming. While we should always seek to be and invest in good soil, the symbolism of the parable, and some horticulture experience, provide insight into what should be done with bad soil.
- The Road | Impacted/Traumatize Heart: Cordon off the area to stop the traffic’s compaction (end repeating trauma). Wait for cracks and foot-holds to form in the defenses. Build soil slowly on top as with shallow soil, allowing hardy plants to break up the compacted substrate as they grow.
- Rocky | Shallow/Ambitious/Hype Heart: Over a long period, introduce a variety of composable materials to integrally nurture a community of soil-building organisms (surround the person in a community of people that “consumes” and “composts” a large variety of experiences and situations together).
- Weedy | Distracted Heart: Weediness is a competition problem that is best solved by altering the dynamics of competition at the beginning or end of growing seasons. In fallow or inactive seasons, work on soil nutrients, animal and microorganism communities, and mechanical conditions to advantage the crop plants over the weed species (when seasons of distraction collapse: build beliefs, skills, behaviors, and relationships that will advantage Gospel seeds over worry, greed, and pleasure).
