[7] The Seven Spirits

The Seven Spirits is a Frame for developing one’s perception systemically based on the seven spirits of Isaiah 11:1-10. It is constructed using [7] The Matrix Frame, the seventh systems shape of the Semantic Ontology Framework (SOF). This frame can be used to create structure around various activities that depend strongly on perception like meditation and mindfulness or education (see [7] The Seven Questions for a derivative Frame dealing with holistic exploration of topics and disciplines).

The Seven Spirits

The LORD

We look to the LORD1 for his Presence in our condition and his vision and provision for our lives, our systems, and our world.

Knowing

the spirit of

Wisdom

We discern with God to identify right perception, right thought, and right living based on experience: God’s, our own, and others.

the spirit of

We apply wisdom to our situation through comprehension, processing, and application in the presence of God.

Doing

the spirit of

Council

We connect our understanding with other’s to reveal God’s full truth and provision through fellowship.

the spirit of

Might

By God’s power manifest in and over us, we accomplish our work with insight and empowering relationships.

Becoming

the spirit of

Knowledge

As our work completes we grow in deeper understanding of our world, ourselves, our God, and others.

the spirit of

Awe

Deeper knowledge produces awe — the encounter of God’s glory — as our boundaries and identities are expanded.

Scriptural Origin

The seven spirits is a prophecy of the 8th century BCE prophet Isaiah concerning a “shoot out of the stump of Jesse” — meaning a new heir to the dynasty of King David (the son of Jesse) who established Israel’s Golden Age, but whose ruling line was interrupted by the events of the Jewish exile to Babylon, and other events.

This heir from Jesse is tied to the Messiah in branches of Judaism and Christianity, with Christianity specifically seeing the fulfillment of the prophecy in Jesus of Nazareth who descended from the line of David according to the testimony of the New Testament.

A shoot will come out of the stock of Jesse,
    and a branch out of his roots will bear fruit.
Yahweh’s Spirit will rest on him:
    the spirit of wisdom and understanding,
    the spirit of counsel and might,
    the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of Yahweh.
His delight will be in the fear of Yahweh.
He will not judge by the sight of his eyes,
    neither decide by the hearing of his ears;
but he will judge the poor with righteousness,
    and decide with equity for the humble of the earth.
He will strike the earth with the rod of his mouth;
    and with the breath of his lips he will kill the wicked.
Righteousness will be the belt of his waist,
    and faithfulness the belt of his waist.

The wolf will live with the lamb,
    and the leopard will lie down with the young goat,
    the calf, the young lion, and the fattened calf together;
    and a little child will lead them.
The cow and the bear will graze.
    Their young ones will lie down together.
    The lion will eat straw like the ox.
The nursing child will play near a cobra’s hole,
    and the weaned child will put his hand on the viper’s den.
They will not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain;
    for the earth will be full of the knowledge of Yahweh,
    as the waters cover the sea.

It will happen in that day that the nations will seek the root of Jesse, who stands as a banner of the peoples; and his resting place will be glorious.

References & Notes

  1. LORD is used to substitute for YHWH (Yahweh), the Hebrew name for God. The name means “I am that I am” and refers to God’s self-referential and eternal nature. The “Spirit of YHWH” then refers to ultimate authority, the center of being, and the unity of all things. God is “I am, that I am” — the ultimate author and authority, the origin and center of being, and reality of unity. God is both Oneness and Allness.
