Building New City

Building New City is a project in the Explorers Theme in Mágoulo’s School for the Spiritually Gifted. The project involves using Minecraft as a platform for thinking about the experience of exploration and developing civilization, the issues that may arise, and how to self-manage to create solutions. The project is session-based. A session is comprised of:

  1. Listening to an audiobook chapter of Max Brooks’ Minecraft: The Island: An Official Minecraft Novel
  2. Writing a summary of The Island chapter along with the slogan/learning points offered by Max
  3. Playing 1 or 1.5 hours of survival Minecraft
  4. Writing a summary of the game play along with a slogan/learning point distilled from the session

Adapting The Session Plan by Learning Level

Star City School (Level 3)

Writing should be done on the MagSchool Forum (Example discussion topic). Topic must use the BNC tag. Each summary should be at least 1 well constructed paragraph of 3-5 sentences. Level 3 writes Keywords for 2a and 2b to use. Play on Minecraft. Take a screenshot of highlight.

New City School (Level 2a)

Writing should be done in their Learning Journal. Each summary should be at least 1 well constructed paragraph of 3-5 sentences. Play on Minecraft. Draw a highlight scene.

New City School (Level 2b)

Writing should be done in their Learning Journal. They should copy the keywords and write a sentence(s) if they want. Play on Minecraft. Draw a highlight scene.

Star City School (Level 1)

Writing should be tracing and doing letter work related to 1 or more keyword. Play using a building set. Take a picture at completion.
