LM1: Mercy
LM1: Mercy is the first “landmark” on the “map” of the Disciple-Making process. The DM makes space within themselves (creating need or desire) and their world (hospitality) to truly meet and see others in light of the Oneness and All-ness of God.
Creating Need or Desire Within Us
Space within ourselves to truly receive others, who they are, and what they have to offer. People invite those who need or want them, not those who are self-reliant, over-capacity, or self-contained. Preparation for an invite into other’s lives.
What It Looks Like
Jesus around the ministry of John. Andrew by the Fig Tree. The Wedding of Cana. Take nothing with you. Paul’s observation at the Areopagus.
Things to Do There
What are the things that should happen around this landmark?
What the Disciple-Maker Does
The Ministry of Mercy over The Ministry of Grace
The Ministry of Presence over The Ministry of Revelation
What the Disciple Does
The disciple is their self. They respond with self-revelation when they feel seen, heard, and received.
The disciple may invite the DM into their space.
Outfitting (Equipment)
Kenosis: The Best Equipment is Nothing
Self-emptying in the model of Jesus. Prereq to active listening and creativity. “Take nothing with you.” The good soil.
Radical Hospitality: Entertaining Everyone As Angels
[Paul’s command. Abraham’s story. Invites them to rest in his space and eat his food.] Historical description of Christians: open with their lives and goods, but closed in terms of their bed.
- Invite to food, space, or experience but NOT to content (i.e. not to talk, to Bible study, or to discipleship).
Rescue Pack: [A trick or empowering idea.] The Hospitality Test. Something non-Judgy.
De-Triggering: removing trigger responses to symbols to pursue what the symbol means to the user. [Example: Paul’s use of the Stoic philosophers.]
Practice (Skills & Applications)
Observing potential: “Behold an Israelite in whom there is no guile.”
Micro: One-on-One Relationships Meso: Teams and Families Mega: Organizations and Enterprises [or do modes?]
Safety: What Not to Do
Do not make it about you and what you know or think you have to share.
