Subject Integration
Subject Integration is the system of mapping subjects and skill sets to projects in Mágoulo’s School for the Spiritually Gifted. Subject matter knowledge and skills are essential components of personal growth and education, but when set as the Prime of learning (center and focus) they can have a disintegrating or demotivating influence. Project-based Learning (PBL), on the other hand, integrates and drives education first by powering growth by Interest, and then we connecting subject matter knowledge and skill though the process of Inquiry.
Subject Grouping
Subjects are grouped in large categories based on relatedness in PBL because projects naturally involve a range of subjects and the learner’s individualized path through a project may wander through or weave in various subjects based on interest. A broad collection of potential subjects encounter in the context of real-world experience is a pillar of identifying Interest in PBL.
As a secondary benefit, tracking what subjects are included as learners grow through a project allows PBL communities to satisfy requirements set by education regulators. Many US states mandate a certain amount of instructional time in certain subjects, or that a certain high-priority subject is covered during a particular grade. This is based on the subject-matter focused approach of Standard Model public education and makes measurement of PBL difficult. By tagging projects with subjects, the knowledge and skills required to do the activities can be more easily mapped to objectives set by regulators.
A project may have one or more subject group, or may use different subject groups within the course of the project. Current main subject groups for projects include:
