Why is weird stuff capitalized?

You may notice that a lot of terms on our site are capitalized. No, we don’t think everything we say is a proper noun or super important. The answer has to do with our site’s underlying web technology. We use a WordPress plugin called “Encyclopedia Pro” for CODEX — our knowledge base. This plugin has a feature that will automatically link terms all over the site to entries of the same name in the CODEX. So if someone writes “Missional Community” and there is a CODEX entry of that name, an automatic link will be inserted when the page is generated, including a cool “tooltip” that defines the term if your hover the mouse cursor over it.

The downside of this technology is that it doesn’t know the when you’re using a word as an actual technical term or just using it casually. To solve this, we have the software set to respect capitalization in its linking. That means if we want a term to link, we capitalize it. If we don’t, we won’t. But that means pretty much any term we use in a technical way is capitalized on our site.

There you have it.
