Is Knowledge Evil or Bad?
When you pursue a spiritual path, no matter how earthy or lofty, you will inevitably encounter warnings about knowledge. Sometimes this is presented as “you’re too much in your head, but what about your heart?” (reason/facts vs feelings/beliefs) Other times, the problem is with the source of the knowledge (human-thinking vs God-thinking / individual intuition vs cultural knowledge).
Sometimes I get the feeling from people around me that they want me to use less of my brain. This makes me feel less-than-seen and also seems to me to be related to a certain prevalent spirit of populism that values confirming beliefs over rigorously-derived knowledge. I like to spend time with God and people pursuing knowledge. So I’m not really feeling people who are telling me to stop thinking, knowing, or figuring things out.
So I’m going to spend some time figuring out what I think about this — in this case through writing Systematics Commentary on Biblical texts on knowledge.
First up: 1 Corinthians 8:1-13 where Paul say “knowledge puffs up” in the context of Meat Offered to Idols.
