Yesterday on the naming call, @Dunamis said that screens aren’t all bad, we have to use screens, but what you really wanted was screens to get out of the way of people being creative, collaborating, and connecting. I think these are great keywords for core, DNA-level values:

    • Create
    • Connect
    • Collaborate

I could totally see us creating “power ups” in our gamification system for extra points/rewards for doing the things in a way the expresses these values. For example, while we may not reward screen time, we might reward screen time that results in creation of #lookup content. While we might not reward a gaming night, we might if you documented you hung out and really connected with your buddies on the #screensdown challenges you were doing.

This would be a way of changing relationships with screens rather than totally banning them. But this would require very definite definitions of “good use”.

We would have to template what we’re talking about. For example:

    Gaming Collab

    1. Pick a video game you want to play with a friend — it has to be a game that allows some kind of co-op play either live or online.
    2. Before you play set a goal in the game you want to achieve together.
    3. Together, come up with the strategy you’ll use in the game to reach the goal. Share this goal with a parent or sibling — someone to process with latter. Ask this person to make sure you debrief with them no matter what (hold you accountable).
    4. Go play and go for the goal.
    5. When your done, both of you join your “processing person” and discuss how things went, how did the strategy work, what you learned, and how you could apply the lessons to other areas.

I really like this! At the same time I’m thinking we should find a way to really challenge the kids to do more screen down activities as i feel so many kids are addicted at this point. We do have to find a way to teach the kids and everyone how to use their screens as tools to create. For example my kids are allowed to watch YouTube only if it’s a video where they are learning something they want to create, such as drawing a picture or learning how to do lacrosse face offs. Even in that at times they try to find the loophole so they can be entertained instead of work through the challenge of creating. Destin will watch the YouTube face off training and instead of practicing what he just watched he will search for another training. Our rules are you have to do what you’re learning.

Good insight Sal. The boys and I talked this morning about purpose and filtering everything in your life on whether it contributes to the mission or doesn’t. I think that’s core to what we’re trying to do — it’s really the lived “Kingdom of God” — and I think it’s what you’re trying to do with filtering screens through usefulness for mission: learning or creating.
