  D&H Canal

  What happened? The D&H Canal was built to connect the Hudson and Delaware rivers.

  What did it have to do with? To transport goods, especially coal, from Pennsylvania to New York.
  Other goods such as wood, stone, brick, cement, and other provisions were also
  transported on the canal.

  Why did it happen? Horse and wagons were slower so they built canals because they didn’t have trucks, cars, planes, or locomotive trains.

  Who was involved? Family founders of many towns in our area such as Wurts family, Jervis family, and the Hones family.

  How was it done? The canal was built with pick axes, shovels, explosion powder, and man power. In certain places, the incline was really steep so John B. Jervis designed the gravity train system, instead of building a numerous number of locks on the canal.

  When/where did it happen? The canal was constructed from 1825-1829, with the gravity train beginning construction in 1827. The canal began in Carbondale, PA and ended at the Hudson River. It crossed the Delaware at Lackawaxen and continued along the New York shore of the Delaware, to the Neversink and Rondout Creeks to the Hudson River. The canal was in use until 1898.

  What did it affect? It provided jobs to the workers of the coal and building industries. It provided goods to the markets. The previous industry of transport such as the Delaware River rafts man were opposed to the canal.
