For Wed afternoon (weather permitting), we want to scout out a woods road route from the intersection to the Southwest of Shalom fire circle up to the oak blow-down in the Blow Down area. See this map.

A good overview of the process can be found in the DEC Unpaved Forest Road HandbookReconnaissance Survey” on pages 8-9.

Here’s a video from a similar project that will give you the idea of what we’ll be doing today.

In our case, we want to avoid digging and moving dirt as much as possible, and want to produce our proper road grade by picking a route across the slope and using switchbacks, but his method of using the level and stick will work for us.

Tools you’ll need (by screen door):

    • laser level & receiver (in yellow case)
    • tripod
    • grade stick
    • grading flags
    • notebook / phone for note taking

If you notice the topographic contour lines on the map, this section of the road will need to rise nearly 100 ft in elevation from the start of the road to the flat area on the top of the hill. The direct distance from the bottom to the top of the hill is perhaps 600-700ft, meaning a road going directly up would have a slope of 1/6 or 1/7. What would this be in % grade?

We’ll need to go across the slope to lower the grade of our road. As we find a route with the correct grade, we need to mark it with the grading flags.
