Laminate: apply an artificial thin layer
@etcetera asked “can anything be laminated”. It think this was in reference to a plastic laminating machine, but I took it broader by pointing out our dining room table was laminated. Instructive here is the etymology of the word, which I think originally applied to adding thin layers in the metallurgy of tools to produce a more durable result (see 1660 definition). This implication of actively applying the layer is what defines any kind of lamination today — the 1939 definition.
