Meriwether Lewis and William Clark were ordered by President Thomas Jefferson to reach the pacific ocean and map portions of the interior of the North American continent. The would leave from St. Charles Missouri in the spring of 1804 and travel until they reach the Mississippi. They would then follow the Mississippi to its head waters and cross the rocky mountains with horses bought from the Shoshone natives. They would wait out the winter of 1805 on the pacific coast and begin their return journey in 1806 finishing it in fall of 1806.

the Lewis and Clark expedition began on 5,14,1804,across western America and was funded by the U.S government.
the trip was mostly on the water and went across the rocky mountain range to the pacific ocean and back the trip ended in 9,23,1806
