PROJECT: Critique the Standard Schema and Design Your Own
In Theme 1: What The Future Holds, we’re talking about hacking the future by building a “life kit”. Part of that life kit is knowledge which can be grouped into three related areas: “Know-What”, “Know-Who”, and “Know-How”. In this Project, we’re going to work on “Know-What”.
The public education system basically designed to build a standard base on “Know-What” in every student. For the perspective of the system, there is a standard set of ideas that are necessary to create good citizens and workers for the good of society. Because of this, many states like NY (where we live) require by law a certain amount of hours of instruction in a certain set of subjects. This is why a home schooling family like ours is required to file a IHIP (Individualized Home Instruction Plan) for each learner in our family. On the IHIP we have to explain how we’re going to teach you all the mandated subjects required by law.
Let’s do a project to explore this idea of the “Know-What” for our “life kit”.
First, let’s critique the schema (the structure of ideas) used in the public school system. Second, let’s create our own schema so we can design our own way of developing “Know-What”.
Part 1: Critique the Public School Schema
The simple way to see the schema of the public school system is to take a look at an IHIP. You can find one for NYC that covers your grade level here.
READ the IHIP completely. Notice two things about the IHIP: it mandates a certain amount of time and a certain set of subjects.
Please react to the following questions in an essay, video, audio, or mixed media response:
How do you feel about the idea that the government requires these things by law? Is that a good or a bad idea? Do you agree that it should be illegal for your parents not to teach you these things at home or by sending you to a school?
Is requiring a certain amount of time for a certain set of subject the best way to equip people with the “Know What” they need for the future? Present some evidence and sources (text, video, audio, etc by someone you consider a convincing authority) to support your position.
Part 2: Design Your Own
Please answer the following questions in an essay, video, audio, or mixed media response:
What would be an ideal set of subjects to create a comprehensive “Know-What” to be future-ready? Would you also design in “Know-Who” and “Know-How”?
What would be your plan to add this knowledge into your life kit? Take some time to think this out. Do some research. Talk ideas through with some people. Come up with a plan your proud of.
