At some point in our conversation, we should talk about bounds as an integral part of culture. Think about this statement of definition/purpose: culture is “myth and symbols designed to form a common context and constrain behaviors the threaten the group” (from [3] The Four Soils of Organizations). In this way, things like honor, code of conduct, and taboos are integral on protecting the group and must be part of any comprehensive Do|Way/Philosophy — and by implication influence Kata|Tehcnique.

Here’s an example of a real-life master of Samurai arts critiquing the 2003 blockbuster “The Last Samurai” in the video They are Violating a Taboo in Our Ryuha | Kobudo Master Reacts to “The Last Samurai” Fighting Scenes

We might want to queue up Last Samurai for a movie night and discuss the roll of bounds in a martial art.

@etcetera — you’ve done some work on your personal code of honor. Have you published this anywhere?

The video was very interesting, it not only showed the scenes of the movie but what they would have done in the situation or their Kata that most resembled the movements in the movie. For just eleven minutes they pack a lot of information into there. Something that I also found interesting is how some of their reactions were not to the actions themselves but to the amount of force applied, for example in one scene someone is thrown very hard, and he said that they don’t do that because it is too hard to fall safely, in another they say that one should never cross your hands because it inhibits your movement, so it is taboo, this thing is not done. A very enlightening video.
