  The Scriptural Case of Wine: Allegory for Screen Use

  For me, the Bible is an important source of guidance. Especially on an allegorical level — how do the stories and experiences of the people in scripture map to our own.

  Since the most concerning effects of screens are in the area of psycho-social and physiological effects — wine and wine use are perhaps a suitable allegory: wine has categorically similar effects. Therefore looking at the case for wine may reveal applications to screens.

  A word study can help with this, especially when context is considered. How was wine used? What were the results? What conclusions can we draw from this to apply to today?

  There are several words in the Bible for wine:

  yayin | יַיִן – H3196 : “wine” from lit. root “effervesce”. KJV used 140 times / wine (138), banqueting (1), winebibbers (1)

  tee-roshe | תִּירוֹשׁ – H8492 : “wine” esp. new or freshly pressed. KJV used 38 times. Most uses relate to new wine as an agricultural product (with grain and sometimes oil) and therefore a indication of domestic prosperity.

  H3196 - יַיִן yayin, yah'-yin; from an unused root meaning to effervesce; wine (as fermented); by implication, intoxication:—banqueting, wine, wine(-bibber).
