The water heater in the back of the Motel stopped providing hot water and required repair. Initial investigation showed that the pilot would not stay lit thus pointing towards either a failure of the burner assembly (specifically the pilot) or the control valve. There were new parts in the maintenance stockpile, so the pilot was replaced. However, this did not correct the issue. We then tried to replace the control valve as a spare was also available. But another problem was encountered. The burner didn’t fit the control valve, a nut meant to create a compression seal wouldn’t catch the thread properly so additional parts were ordered. When they arrived though they seemed to have the same problem. The nut meant to create a compression seal didn’t fit the threading.

The solution was to swap the control valves. The one we had in stock matched the newly delivered burner assembly and vice versa. Now with a pilot and control valve that matched we finished the repair with the sole hiccup of having to clear residual air from the gas line. The extra control valve and pilot/burner assembly were put into the stockpile and the water heater relit.
