For Monday/Wisdom we’re working on the classic Euclid’s Elements using a course for Hillsdale College. The course uses elements as a foundational work to discuss logic and reasoning.

At the heart of logic is the “logic statement.” Logic statements are statements that can only be true* or false (*always true OR sometimes true). But after watching the video on this, none of us could really define what a logic statement is an is not. Numbers are pretty easy: “5 > 2” is either true or false. But move away from numbers and it gets quickly confusing.

Let’s do some research and try to find the best explanation for what is a logic statement and what are the best ways to determine if a sentence qualifies as a logic statement or not.

Post links and videos to the best explanations and resources on this thread.

A logic statement is a sentence that can be defined as True or False. For example, Fire is hot, this is a logical statement because unless you can prove that fire is not hot all the time it is True or False.

So apparently there is two logic statements the first is the truth the second is the negation of the first. For example the “sun is shining” than the negation of the statement is the “sun is not shining” The statement can be right or wrong or as the wise Jedi said “do or do not there is no try” (thanks master Yoda) there is no in between “yes or no truth or false” so by reading this use the info online and tell me if this is true or false (Ethan) also this is the link where i got it from https://newtrackmathematics.com.ng/2021/08/05/logic-in-mathematics/

This was a pretty good video on the topic: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aiS2EgYxtYc

I’ve attached a screenshot of what is a logic statement and what is not. One thing Adam Prance points out is that anything that is a question or an instruction are open ended and can’t be given a True/False truth value.

Another example of something that isn’t a statement is a paradox like “I am lying to you now”. How come this can’t be a statement?
