Now that Zippy (our new Tropical House Gecko) is in our lives, we have several projects that we can do to learn different things:

    1. The Fundamental Needs of Living Things: what do all living things need to survive? He can analyze the habitat we created for Zippy and his care needs and translate this into a Frame that will help us think about how to take care of all living things and their habitats.1 STEM, Science, Biology, Ecology
    2. [7] The Seven Questions for Animals: what questions should we ask to understand an animal species? We can adapt the Seven Questions based on the fundamental questions a Zoologist asks. 2 STEM, Science, Biology, Zoology
    3. Evaluating Introduced Organisms: Zippy’s species is native to sub-Sahara Africa, but somehow they’ve become introduced to tropical locations in North and South America. We know these geckos are beneficial for homeowners who want them to eat insects around home, but are there problems their presence has created? How do you evaluate the impact of an introduced species and know if it’s invasive in the environment? We need to know this because we will likely be introducing species to Camp (chickens, crop plants, beneficial helper organisms, etc). STEM, Science, Biology, Ecology, HWE, Earth Care
    4. What Sticky Feet You Have: Tropical House Geckos are known for their very large and sticky lamellae. How do they work and can we create a design challenge where we create our own lamellae and see which design holds to the surface the longest? STEM, Science, Biology, Technology, Engineering, Materials Science
    5. Pet Shop: We can recap the process of buying our pet at the pet shop and do some play with a pet shop of our own. Add prices to stuffed animals (talk about what influences price: effort, rarity, utility), sell and write receipts, keep personal (customer) and shop ledgers. CHES, economics, STEM, Math

References & Notes

  1. I did a Google search and found the following: 1. respiration gases, 2 energy, 3 biogenic material, 4 habitat/space, 5 liquid water.
  2. See Zoology and you’ll come up with something like: Classification, Structure, Development, Behavior, Distribution, and Interactions. So far I can say the last two can be categorized as Ecology, and maybe the first two are Form, and the middle two Function.
