Q & A

What do you mean by “inspired change agents”?

We consider the following people “change agents” (this is a growing list):

• freedom fighters • disrupters • innovators • prophets • reclaimers • conscious entrepreneurs • grassroots organizers • activists • misfits • dissidents • radicals • wild nurturers • teachers • artists • farmers • creatives •

Basically, if you look at the world that is and can imagine a world that ought to be and you have passion to work towards that change — we consider you a change agent. As a matter of fact, we’d like your number.

We say “inspired” change agents because, literally, inspired means to be full of breath or spirit. We think the path to real change will always require deeper inwardness and higher consciousness: what most people would consider spirituality. We don’t limit our community or work to any particular type of spirituality, though many of our members are very passionate about their faith or path. All spiritual flavors are welcome (including religious, non-religious, atheist, agnostic, etc). But we insist on creating a space where people aren’t afraid to reach in and reach up as they reach out and respect each other’s efforts to do so. We encourage people to draw heavily on personally relevant mythology and spiritual resources and make ourselves available to each other to explore these life-sources.

What do you mean by “transformative and holistically good”?

To be very honest, we’re pretty sick of the way things are going right now. We think we’ve got basically three problems: humans are degrading our human and natural resources, we are slaves to systems of inequity that limit our productive capacity, and we are creating a technological nightmare that threatens our future. We like to talk about the difference between “the world that is” and “the world that ought to be”. We’re more interested in investing ourselves in creating and thriving in the latter rather than just surviving in the former. Because of this, we’re not afraid to push each other to be about good work for good reasons. We’re really convinced the time for change is now, if it wasn’t long ago. Either way, we need to be about the business of waking up and getting to work.

How will you support my mission?

The reason we created Praxis was because we wanted to invest in each other to produce better, more powerful, more sustainable solutions for our families, lives, and work. Here are some of the ways we do that (make use of as many as you wish):

A shared open-source framework and knowledge-base

The framework you’ll begin to learn at the training is a powerful map for growing transformative community. It also can bring life and power to many areas of work and life. It’s based on rich insights from mythology and wisdom literature combined with the best in systems and holonic thinking (sometimes called quantum thinking). We view our framework as completely interactive: we want you to take it, run with it, and build it by feeding back in your own insights and experiences.

This training will focus on Phase 1: Belonging, Zones 1, 2, and 3 on the Journey Map:

Phase 1: Belonging

Zone 2

The Story Zone

Core skills: listening to people and holding open space for their own journey and discovery towards their aspiration

Zone 3

Revelation

Core skills: resourcing people as they discover meaning and identity that meets the situation

Zone 1

Incarnation

Core skills: supporting embodiment of and commitment to the mission

A rhythm of community events

We view our community as a form of family and try to get together four times a year:

Spring CollabSummer Non-ConFall CollabWinter Non-Con
A focused time to collaborate and train, planting the “seeds” we’ll be “growing” over the next year. More casual community time to debrief, get direct help, and enjoy each other (maybe a camp-out this year)A focused time to collaborate and train, harvesting insights, innovations, and improving methods.More casual community time to debrief, get direct help, and enjoy each other (a celebration focused time together)

We develop and grow ourselves in groups (called “generations”), based on a 3-year cycle:

Y1 | BelongingY2 | BecomingY3 | Believing
We design and build in the “Belonging” zone of our communities: as they share their story, discover meaning, and commit to participation in the mission. We work and refine in the “Becoming” zone of our communities: as they learn to grow each other capacity and each members gift and contribution to community synergy. We deploy and broadcast our communities power and products to impact the world and catalyze new stories and spaces.

A facilitated, dynamic peer-coaching network

Our experience has proven time and again that people grow and overcome limitations to accomplish great things when they have nurturing, consistent, and accountable relationships with their peers with whom they share a cause, a mission, and a body of practices. Because of this, we are developing an intentional peer-coaching network of Catalysts, Members, and Facilitators that invest in each other for maximum growth, optimal effectiveness, and mutual accountability. Information and connectedness are important, but they do not on their own produce deep and board change. To knowledge and relationship, laser-focused intention and concerted effort must be applied to catalyze transformation.

We organize our network into three roles for change agents:

  • Catalysts: leaders of teams who are responsible for growing people and producing change. Catalysts resource and empower their team to accomplish their mission and grow each other through peer-coaching and teaching and mentorship where required. Catalysts do this with the support from Facilitators in a rapid diffusion model of “learn today, practice tomorrow, teach the next day”. They meet with Facilitators bi-weekly and also meet with their team at least bi-weekly (in certain applications they may do life or work with their team far more frequently).
  • Members: teammates lead by catalysts who are seeking on-the-ground growth and change. Members practice peer-coaching and direct action on the team with support and leadership from a Catalyst at least bi-weekly as they pursue a common mission.
  • Facilitators: experienced practitioners who coach, train, mentor and support Catalysts in the leadership of their teams. Facilitators are full- or part-time professionals who curate and refine practices and resources for the community, which they themselves embody and model in real-world applications. Facilitators meet with Catalysts in a bi-weekly rhythm and hold “office hours” to meet with teams as needed to help with tough challenges or collaborate on strategic initiatives.

Powerful consulting, design, and project management talent

We’re not really trying to toot our horn, but there is so much talent and experience in our network, its astounding. We love to help each other on projects on both a paid and pro-bono basis. Whatever insight you need or job you need completed, you can probably find someone in our network to meet that need. UnusualKingdom also provides services related to our expertise: what we call apostolic/prophetic design and project management.

What are the applications for this?

We believe there are a lot of ways to do good work for good reasons, but we think there are three main categories of projects that will be especially helpful for change agents in the immediate future:

Missional Communities
(MisComs)

People in relational groups dedicated to each other and to a higher cause. This includes:

  • Missional families
  • Grassroots faith communities
  • Simple churches
  • Mission/cause-specific activist groups
  • Hubs, co-ops, and intentional communities
  • Art/media communities

Shared Projects

A MisCom embedded in an institution or in partnership with a cause-based institution. This includes:

  • Tight-knit volunteer communities
  • Forward-focused service groups
  • Caused-based groups at work
  • Teams in non-profits and foundations

Economic Enterprise

A MisCom operating as a business entity, association, or influencer +fans. This includes:

  • Cause or mission-driven businesses
  • Certain stakeholder enterprises
  • Conscious start-ups
  • Mission-aware artists, personalities, and their fanbase
  • Inspired coaches and consultants
