Fasting 2021: Spiritual Preparation for A Move of God

Right now people across the NYC metro area (and beyond) are connecting in some new ways because they sense God is about to do a new thing in his people and in this region. Some of those people are connecting in a group on this site called “The Wave & The Way“. The Wave is the move of God we see on the horizon, and The Way is the way of Jesus: his life and ministry as a model of how we should navigate both the world and the Kingdom of God.

Though we see God is up to something, to be honest we don’t quite yet know what that is. But we want to be ready when he shows us. Because of this, many in our group feel lead to a season of prayer and fasting for the Month of December. I’d like to share some video teaching on this, and then invite you into an online conversation that will hopefully support and enrich your investment in fasting.

Some Helpful Teaching

Two videos may be helpful for this fast. First is a teaching on how I think of the what and why of fasting. It’s an expansion on an explanation I gave at a dinner party when put on the spot by a friend (ironic, right?):

The second video is by Shodankeh Johnson, founding pastor of New Harvest Global Ministries, a discipleship and church planting movement in Sierra Leone. In it he does some powerful teaching on fasting, but also a good helping of inspiring storytelling about what prayer and fasting can do for disciple-making, even in an extremely challenging context:
