Jesus said:
I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.
John 14:6-7 NIV
He’s making a claim that people know God as Father by getting to know Jesus. The Disciples knew Jesus by journeying with him, working with him, and living day-to-day with him, and that’s how they could know and see the Father.
If we take this seriously, we should shape our lives to look like Jesus — to practice what he practiced and travel with him doing his work. That’s the most important principle in knowing Jesus and, through him, knowing the Father. If we do this, and help others do this, we will make the Kingdom of God — “The World That Ought to Be” or “The World God Designed” — visible to others.
Since Jesus showed the best way to be like him was to journey with him and do what he’s doing, we need a way to see what journeying with Jesus look like in our life. One way to do this is to treat the story of Jesus as a map that can show us the way of following Jesus in our own life.
We can even tell that story using the places where we live as symbols to remember and recognize the way of Jesus:
